Course Description

In this popular online course, you will be introduced to the historical themes that have shaped the art world, explore some of the major art movements and the works of a variety of artists from different periods. If you have a curiosity about art, and want to be able to understand its history, exchange ideas and be inspired in a relaxed and friendly environment, this is the course for you. Please note that the course takes place on the Zoom platform.

Course Requirements

If you want to learn more about art history from the Early Renaissance to the modern day and improve your understanding, then this is the course for you. This is a general course so it is suitable for all. Some learners do just one term, but most learners return for all three as the content changes over the year (see course content).

Course Content

You will be introduced to the historical themes that have shaped the art world. Taking a chronological approach, we will explore some of the major art movements and the works of a variety of artists from different periods. Term 1 : The genres, styles and historical contexts that shaped the history of art from the Dark Ages to the time of the Enlightenment, Part 1 . Term 2: The genres, styles and historical contexts that shaped the history of art from the Dark Ages to the time of the Enlightenment, Part 2. Term 3: When does Modernity begin The genres, styles and historical contexts that shaped the history of art from the time of the Enlightenment to the present day. You will: identify different art movements and make comparisons; relate artworks to periods and arts movements; develop skills to discuss and interpret art and recognise the 'visual vocabularies' used by artists; develop independent research skills to delve deeper into areas of interest; and develop an understanding of the impact and influence of art history on contemporary art.

Teaching and Learning Methods

There will be online equivalents of classroom-based activities, including group discussions and pair work. You will be encouraged to do independent study and given suggestions for visits to galleries. Students are encouraged to take part in discussions, contribute their opinions to debates and give short presentations. As with all our programmes, this course includes individual reviews, offering you time with your personal tutor to reflect and set targets. Visiting art exhibitions and doing wider reading and research will give you a greater depth of knowledge on the subject and expand your potential to gain from the course.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which will outline the learning objectives for the course. You will also be invited to set your own goals. You will receive feedback against the achievement of these outcomes during the course from your tutor, and in written form at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Once you have completed the course, you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject. Join one of our shorter, specialist Art History courses such as Art History: Migration and Identity in 21st Century British Art or Creative Art Appreciation.
