This is a structured course to develop basic skills and learn core techniques and processes. You will be introduced to hand-building techniques like pinching, coiling, slab work, use of moulds and some basic throwing on the wheel. You will also learn to apply glazes and slips for decorating. Returning learners can start to work on their own projects. It is recommended to enrol for a whole year where possible, to build your core skills comprehensively.

This three-day course explores the creative possibilities of making plaster press moulds for shape and texture to be used with ceramics processes. You will study a brief history of press mould making, exploring textures and shapes that work well with this process and how to develop your own ideas. For existing ceramics students this course is ideal for those who wish to develop this part of their personal practice.

Using Wire with Ceramics
Using Wire with Ceramics
We will look at contemporary makers that combine these materials and explore possible techniques and outcomes. You will experiment with and create small or medium objects and fire them inside a saggar. You will learn to use stainless steel, nichrome wire, stoneware, paper clays, nails and cutlery, with firings at low and high temperature. You will also learn about use of Egyptian Paste as a bonding element at the earthenware range. This course will not cover the glazing of work.
