Creative Writing: The Writer's Craft - Develop your Skills and Understanding

Course Description

This ten-week course is for those wanting to develop their creative writing skills and deepen their understanding of the writing industry.

Location: Camden

Course Requirements

You will need a good level of written English, at least GCSE level.

Course Content

This course is an opportunity to complete a piece of writing of your choice in either short form prose or poetry. You will individually select a creative writing short form or poetry competition entry criteria. You will then use this criteria to hone your skills to complete a stand-alone piece in its own right, rather than an extract. You do not have to enter the competition. We will continue to look specifically at structure/plot/shape, character and the use of metaphorical devices to develop atmosphere and setting. With this focus, you will continue to develop new ways of looking at creative writing and expand your critical awareness.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Practical written work; reading and discussion; and groupwork. At the beginning of term you will receive a reading list to enable you to explore the subject further. There is no set homework, but you will be encouraged to read and write at home. In addition to the classes, you are encouraged to read regularly and extend your writing exercises. The college also has an exciting programme of events, exhibitions and competitions throughout the year. Your tutor will make you aware of these and your participation is welcomed and encouraged.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which will outline the learning objectives for the course. You will also be invited to set your own goals. You will receive feedback against the achievement of these outcomes during the course from your tutor, and in written form at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.
