Etching, Photo Etching and Relief - Monday Afternoon Mixed Level

Course Description

This course will help to build on your existing printmaking skills and improve and develop your studio-based work. The tutor will provide strategies to stretch and challenge you as a printmaker. You will be supported to explore and develop your own ideas; work on self-initiated personal projects or optional tutor-led projects. Beginners will follow a structured programme to learn the basics before progressing onto more challenging work.

Course Requirements

All levels welcome -no previous experience is necessary. Basic materials provided including an A5 plate to learn techniques. You can buy additional materials at cost price including plates, tools and specialist papers. These are paid for during your course via our internal payment system. If you are interested in a specialist technique not listed or described in the course description, please contact before enrolling to find out if it is possible for us to accommodate this. Please note we do use solvents in this studio, and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), is provided.

Course Content

The studio is equipped with a full range of etching and relief printing equipment to allow you to work with line etching (soft and hard ground), aquatint, spit-bite, colour printing, photo etching, Chin Colle and relief printing. You will be able to work on your own projects or your tutor can offer you more structured projects if you prefer. You will be encourage you to build and learn new techniques and develop your creative practice. Five-week courses allow for flexible individualised learning so that you can choose your starting point at any time in the year. We recommend that you consider enrolling for a whole term (10 weeks) or for the full year to really get into your subject and hone your skills.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Talks with PowerPoint presentations, tutor demonstrations, practical work, one-to-one tutor guidance and group discussions. Your tutor will also discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects and research. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, literature, and websites for you to visit to enrich your study.


There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Once you have completed the course, you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject in the Creative Arts department. For Art and Design courses, once you have developed a portfolio of work you could consider applying to the Foundation Diploma in Art and design as a Pathway in to Higher Education. Studio courses are for those learners with some subject knowledge or who have been studying the same subject at the college for 3 full years. Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet learners’ needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an interview with the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer.
