Art of Paper: Folding, Pleating and Manipulation (Beginners)

Course Description

Paper is an inexpensive sculptural material. Pliable and easily folded, pleated, cut and manipulated with simple tools. Three-dimensional shapes from simple to complex and can be useful for artists, architects, fashion designers and milliners. Learn some key basic techniques, hand folding, scoring and manipulation. The sessions will also cover tools and types of paper best suited for this art form. Please note we do not cover paper engineering for pop-up books.

Course Requirements

For those who already have some experience who want to develop their skills.

Course Content

A brief explanation of the history, methods and uses of paper manipulation. Basic hand folding, scoring and pleating. Learning some key basic techniques - hand folding, scoring and manipulation to produce simple forms. The session will also cover tools and types of paper best suited for this art form.

Teaching and Learning Methods

This is a workshop environment with a focus on practical learning, with one-to-one, individual tutor support. There will also be group discussions and reviews. Where appropriate the tutors will offer presentations, talks and demonstrations. There will be lots of inspiration using books, Pinterest and the internet Technical handouts will be provided where needed these are available electronically. There is no formal homework, however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects and research. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, events or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Once you have completed the course you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject in the Creative Arts department.
