The course is unaccredited; you do not need any qualifications to join but just a willingness to learn. You are welcome if you have little experience of drawing or have done some drawing before but want to continue to develop your skills and continue to improve. The course is flexible and can take into account individual, as well as group needs.

All levels and abilities are welcome (including beginners, those who may not have done any drawing for a long time, as well as those with more experience). For more experienced practitioners, there is a project option available from which you can further focus and enhance your drawing practice. In this course you will use drawing materials and techniques to further improve your skills. As part of the course programme, you will be shown and taught how to explore using charcoal, wet and dry drawing media including ink and pencil. You will practice and learn a range of traditional and non-traditional techniques which you can use during the sessions and when drawing outside the class. The course enables you to consolidate your drawing skills, develop your own ideas and produce work involving more complex compositions. For those who are at an even more advanced level, project options are available to focus your ideas. By the end of the course you will be able to: Draw using line, tone and colour, Draw using measurement to understand structure, scale and proportion and Develop your own ideas to produce a personal project.

The teacher will introduce different techniques and you will learn by applying these drawing techniques in a variety of contexts including looking at how some artists have and use drawing to create different types of work. There will be ample opportunities for you to draw while the tutor works with the group, as well as with you on a one-to-one basis, to help you improve your drawing through practice and discussion. Basic resources are provided within each lesson including handouts to support learning and the course materials are also available online. Each 10-week course usually includes at least one museum visit where you will be taught how to draw from museum objects. No work outside the sessions is required. However, the college has an exciting programme of events, exhibitions and competitions throughout the year. Your tutor will make you aware of these and your participation is welcomed and encouraged.While there is no formal homework; your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, or websites and books for you to use to enrich your study.

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which will outline the learning objectives for the course. You will also be invited to set your own goals. You will receive feedback against the achievement of these outcomes during the course from your tutor, and in written form at the end of the course.However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course.

Once you have completed the course, you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject in the Creative Arts department. For Art and Design courses, once you have developed a portfolio of work, you could consider applying to the Accreditted courses including L1, L2 Fashion or Illustration, or L3 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design as a pathway into higher education.
