No previous experience is necessary, though the ability to work safely and with consideration to others is essential as is as an interest in working in a range of print media.

The course will include an introduction to print processes. Initially these will include mono printing, etching and lino printing. As the year progresses these processes will be extended and new processes introduced, for example dry point, soft-ground etching aquatint and collagraph printing. Handouts will be provided to give you further guidance, focus and structure. Independent exploration is also encouraged. You will gain a basic working knowledge of the techniques covered, as well as some contextual knowledge of their application. You will be encouraged to use techniques learned to experiment and produce your own unique images. In each term, you will develop an understanding of a range of printmaking techniques. You will use these techniques to produce your own original prints, develop your ideas and extend your skills whilst working safely. You will: design and create a simple print understand and use the health and safety rules for the print studio evaluate and analyses the success of your own and others work In term 1, you will be introduced to mono-printing, hard-ground etching, linocut, soft-ground etching, aquatint and collagraph. In term 2, you will extend your etching techniques to include spit-bite aquatint, sugar lift, dry point, carborundum, combining dry-point with hard-ground and counterproof etching. In term 3, you will be introduced to stencil techniques, marble papermaking and embossed printing. You will learn about presentation of original prints and editioning and focus on developing your own ideas to produce a limited edition print.

Teaching methods include group discussion, one to one guidance and tutoring, demonstration of working methods, visits to the local glass centre (Camden) All resources used within each lesson are available electronically. There is no formal homework; however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects and research . Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, gigs or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Once you have completed the course you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject in the Creative Arts department. For Art and Design courses, once you have developed a portfolio of work you could consider applying to the Foundation Diploma in Art and design as a Pathway in to Higher Education. Studio courses are for those learners with some subject knowledge or who have been studying the same subject at the college for 3 full years.
