Latin Percussion (Beginners/Mixed Level)

Course Description

On this course you will learn drumming techniques and rhythms from Cuba, Latin America and the African diaspora such as Rumba, Salsa, Bantu, Arara and Yoruba rhythms may be included. You will also learn to apply some of the rhythms to popular music. You will learn hand drumming techniques on congas and have the opportunity to gain experience with other instruments such as timbale, bata and bongo.

Course Requirements

No previous knowledge/qualifications are required. However, you will be expected to complete an Individual Learning Plan to help support your progress.

Course Content

On this course you will learn:

How to play conga sounds
Afro-Cuban and other Latin rhythms
Rhythms from the African Diaspora
Group performance skills
Application of rhythms to music styles
Rhythmic tablature

Please note: although you will be introduced to all the above over a single term (10-weeks), the course is developmental over the whole year. If you sign up for the full three terms (courses A, B and C) at the start of the academic year e.g. August / September you will be entitled to the early bird discount.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will learn through Practical activities, Peer assessment, Listening and analysis, Demonstration and discussion, Use of supporting online materials (Google Classroom / OneDrive), Individual practice, Use of ILT (computers), Continuous assessment

Independent Learning

You will be expected to work independently to develop your drumming technique. The focus should be on instrumental practice but should also include developing your understanding of rhythm theory e.g. tablature.

Assessment

You will be continually assessed through your practical activities and will receive feedback in a variety of ways e.g. peer assessment, verbal and written feedback from your teacher.

Qualification you will achieve

This is a non-accredited course but a certificate of completion can be provided by the College on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Upon successful completion of the course you may be able to progress to accredited courses at Level 1, join the drum kit classes or perform in ensembles.

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer.
