Shibori Textiles (Beginners/Intermediate)

Course Description

Learn to create textile designs using the ancient Japanese art of Shibori while dyeing and manipulating cloth to create a variety of patterns. You will be introduced to the different types of cloth manipulation such as Arashi, Itajame, Nui,Kumo, Kanako and Miura. On this course you will create a series of samples.

Course Content

On this course you will learn how to prepare a range of cloths for dyeing using different shibori fabric manipulations techniques. This will include also: dyeing, vat and tray techniques. How to manipulate cloth and results achieved.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will be able to develop your skills by engaging with suitable projects determined by your existing level of experience in discussion with the tutor. Teaching is both as a whole class and an individual, one-to-one basis using demonstrations, discussion, examples, samples, handouts and other technical support material where appropriate. You will be able to negotiate individual learning goals together with the tutor.

You will be working at you own pace and be given verbal feedback on your progress.

Resources used within each lesson are available for learners on our online learning platform, iLearn.

Independent Learning

There is no formal homework, however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, gigs or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course.

Qualification you will achieve

There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer.
