Jewellery Making - Wednesday Evening (Mixed Level)

Course Description

On this mixed level class you will learn a range of jewellery making techniques and processes, including silversmithing and stone setting, amongst others.

You will produce practical and wearable jewellery pieces.

More experienced learners are encouraged to work on self -initiated projects and beginners will be offered set projects to build their core skills. Your tutor will support your development in both your technical and design skills.

Course Requirements

The course is suitable for all levels and abilities, but learners must be comfortable working independently in a mixed group on their own projects. Structured Beginners courses are available for those who would prefer more guidance and to work in a group of students at a similar level.

Course Content

On this mixed level class you will learn a range of jewellery making techniques and processes, including silversmithing and stone setting, amongst others.

Course Content

Beginners will practice basic jewellery making techniques like piercing and shaping metal, soldering and setting a stone in a bezel setting, as well as a range of surface texturing techniques. You will also learn how to use a range of equipment safely. Intermediate and advanced learners will be supported with their self-initiated projects in relation to materials and equipment, techniques and the development of designs and ideas.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching will consist of practical demonstrations of soldering; Discussion of contemporary makers; YouTube tutorials; practical work; 1-2-1 support; soldering challenges and questions; Group discussion and evaluation; Health and Safety in the workshop. Resources used within each lesson are available electronically. There is no formal homework, however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions and websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Once you have completed the course you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject in the Creative Arts department. For Art and Design courses, once you have developed a portfolio of work you could consider applying to the Foundation Diploma in Art and design as a Pathway in to Higher Education. Studio courses are for those learners with some subject knowledge or who have been studying the same subject at the college for 3 full years. Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer.
