This fun, hands-on course will introduce you to the art of Papermaking. Learn how to use recycled cotton pulp and other fibres and materials to form your own sheets of paper. Experiment with creating different shapes, layering with colour, adding inclusions and embellishments, watermarks and embossing. At the end of the course, you will have a selection of your own handmade paper pieces.
No previous experience is required. Students should be able to follow verbal and written instructions. Explore the nature of papermaking and its potential as an artistic medium. Select and use appropriate materials such as inclusions and embellishments. Use found objects to create textures, embossing and watermarks. Learn how to use different coloured pulps to create gradient papers and pulp paintings. Experiment with different moulds and deckles to create different paper shapes and sizes. Use skills and knowledge gained in class to work independently on your own projects.
Teaching and Learning Methods
This is a workshop environment with a focus on practical learning, with one-to-one, individual tutor support. There will also be group discussions and reviews. Where appropriate the tutors will offer presentations, talks and demonstrations. There will be lots of inspiration using books, Pinterest and the internet Technical handouts will be provided where needed these are available electronically. There is no formal homework, however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects and reaesarch. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, events or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.
