Course Description

Do you need a nationally recognised qualification for work or further study Or do you want to gain a GCSE for personal satisfaction and to test yourself in an external public exam This 18 week GCSE English Language course starts in January and follows on from the 12 week preparation course. On this course you will practise reading and analysing a range of text types, and develop your ability to express yourself effectively and accurately in writing in preparation for a GCSE exam in the summer

Course Requirements

You will need to take a GCSE English Initial Assessment before you start the course, to see whether your current skills are sufficient to enable you to achieve A*-C with us in one year. For those not yet ready for GCSE, Functional Skills lessons at the appropriate level will be made available to provide a bridge to future enrolment onto the GCSE programme.

Course Content

You will develop your ability to read critically, evaluating and analysing texts. You will also develop your ability to write clearly and effectively in a style appropriate to the intended audience and with a high degree of accuracy in your grammar, punctuation and spelling. You will practice exam style questions in preparation for the GCSE exam. The GCSE exam consists of two papers both of which have a reading and a writing element. Paper 1 looks at fiction & imaginative writing and paper 2 looks at non-fiction and transactional writing. You will look at literature and texts ranging from the 19th century to modern. There is also an English Language Endorsement component which will assess you on your speaking skills.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will be taught in small groups, pairs and individually. You will participate in discussions, complete worksheets, read texts, complete writing tasks, ask and answer questions from the teacher and other learners, and use computers to access online resources. You will discuss your individual learning goals and your progress towards these goals at regular points throughout the course with your teacher. All learners are expected to attend regularly and be on time. You will be expected to undertake at least 5 hours a week of independent study outside the classroom in addition to your course time to consolidate your learning and ensure success.


Your teacher will regularly assess your skills throughout the course with activities, homework assgnments and practice exams. At the end of the course you will sit a formal exam. During the course you will also need to complete an internal Spoken English assessment. GCSE in English Language

Next Steps and Progression

Most learners will progress onto a higher level learning or employment as many courses and professions require GCSE English at Standard Pass Grade 4 (former C) or above.

Additional Learning Support

Additional Learning Support (ALS) is available for this course. ALS is subject to an assessment with a trained member of staff and support may include one or more of the following: support in the classroom, out of class workshops such as English, ICT and maths and specialist support for dyslexia. Provision of assistive equipment is also available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments with our Disability Officer. Please let us know as soon as possible about your learning needs and/or disabilities so we can arrange support at the earliest opportunity. Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site.
