Course Description

This course will enable students to have an opportunity to practise and develop their English speaking and listening, reading and writing skills. Learners will be able to improve their skills through activities and projects including the creation of a recipe book, healthy eating and well-being projects and exploring the possibilities of community volunteering.

Course Requirements

This Supported Learning course is aimed at learners with mild to moderate learning difficulties and or disabilities, aged 25 and over.
No previous knowledge or qualifications are required. You will need an interview before enrolment can take place to ensure your needs can be met and supported appropriately for you to succeed. Please refer to Contact Information below.

Course Content

Use a variety of resources to develop the four skills in language learning and broaden knowledge.
Understand how to follow instructions, develop new vocabulary and learn how to research independently.
Follow health and safety rules.
Work in a small group to develop your language, creativity and problem solving skills.
Complete projects, i.e. make a recipe book based on your choice of a dish..
Discover the benefits of eating healthy.
Develop self-confidence by sharing and presenting your creations in small groups.
Learn how to take part in community volunteering.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching and learning takes place in a small group with support.
Learners will be guided to use materials and specialist equipment 1:1 and in very small groups.
Computers will be used to research ideas and designs for small projects.
Demonstrations will be at a pace to suit all learners.
Learners will share ideas and be supported by their teacher through individual projects.
Handouts and course materials will be provided.
All classes are supported by specialist Additional Learning Support staff and we ensure teaching is learner-centred and tailored to meet learners' specific needs.
Resources used within each lesson are available for learners on our online learning platform.

Independent Learning

In addition to the classes, you will be assisted to explore ways to practise independently inside and outside of college as much as possible for you.

The skills learnt should be practised so that you develop and progress but help is on hand for this to happen.



Assessment

Assessment takes place in many ways and using a variety of fun and entertaining methods including having your work put on display.
You will be assessed throughout all the stages of your development but there are no exam-based assessments of learning however you will have to complete set tasks to show that you are acquiring the skills we would want you to.
You will also share your thoughts about your growing skills and knowledge with your teacher.

Qualification you will achieve

You will receive a personalised WMC Certificate on successful completion of the course.

Next Steps and Progression

Each learner will spend time talking through their next steps and progression with their teacher.
Following completion of your course, you will be able to develop your skills further on another of our Supported Learning courses if you are not ready for one of the many mainstream college courses.Your teacher will help you to explore all suitable options.

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.
