Audio Post-Production - Introduction to Audio in Media

Course Description

Our 10-week audio post-production course will introduce you to the fascinating world of sound for media in areas such as game and film. You will learn how to combine dialogue, sound effects and music to create finished media products and the course will help you to understand the historical developments that underpin today's industry practice.

Course Requirements

This is a course for beginners so the only requirement is confidence using a computer and researching. The course will be taught on Macs and part of the teaching will be to help you better understand and navigate MACOSX. Learners who have previously studied music production and/or film will find a lot of their skills translate effectively into developing competence in audio-post production practice. You will also need to complete an individual learning plan.

Course Content

The course will cover a variety of subjects that will help you understand the processes of audio post-production. This could include content such as replacing dialogue in a film clip, preparing a podcast for upload, creating your own game sound effects and understanding the audio conventions of streaming platforms. The course will cover relevant history and profile practitioners who have made an impact in moving forward sound design techniques. You will also engage in practical projects that could range from replacing the soundtrack of an advert to designing your own podcast.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will learn through, practical activities, group exercises and peer assessment, listening and analysis, demonstration and discussion, use of supporting online materials, individual practice, use of ILT and continuous assessment. There is no homework associated with the sessions but please do discuss extension activities with your tutor.

Assessment

You will be continually assessed through your practical activities and will receive feedback in a variety of ways such as peer assessment, verbal and written feedback from your teacher. This is a non-accredited course but a certificate of completion can be provided by the College on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Upon successful completion of the course you may be able to progress to accredited courses at Level 2 such as our Level 2 Music (Technology) or Level 2 Film. Alternatively, you may wish to try our higher level audio post-production course, Location Recording, Foley and Sound Design.

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.
