WM College Millinery Tutor Creates for hit show Downton Abbey

WM College prides itself on the expertise of tutors that teach the wide array of courses on offer. Not only do learners learn from the best, but they also gain access to key industry insight to pursue their passion into a career or further education.

WM College Millinery tutor, Sahar Freemantle, is no exception. An award-winning milliner based in London with her our own working studio. Sahar’s work has been exhibited at the V&A, as well as internationally in Japan, Portugal, Mali, Berlin, and France. She has been featured in The Guardian, The Independent and Evening Standards list of best Ascot Hats, and dressed the heads of celebrities such as Ellie Goulding, Paloma Faith and Katy Perry. Mostly recently Sahar has put her attentions into creating for the screen in ITV’s hit show Downton Abbey.

Having trained in Edinburgh College of Art in Performance Costume and a QEST (The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust) scholar, Sahar brings a wealth of knowledge to WM College. Commenting on her recent creations for Downton Abbey Sahar said:

“I studied with Anna Robbins (costume designer for Downton Abbey) at Edinburgh, she was always a stickler for perfect work and historical accuracy, even as a student. I knew when she got the job every part of costume would need to be historically accurate to the year.

The headwear I created was meticulously made by hand and represented the characters style, as well as a time in history and social status. However, some tweaks needed to be made for screen. They used my upturned brim shapes instead of the ‘bell’ type cloche, because you need to see the face of the actor, and most hats needed a groove at the back, to allow for wigs.”
