Welcome back to the summer term – the final term of the academic year. This is an exciting time as many of you work towards completing your courses and, for some, preparing for exams. We wish you the very best with your revision and assessments.
Alongside the hard work, we also want you to take time to reflect on and celebrate how far you’ve come. Your achievements this year matter, and this term is a great opportunity to recognise your progress and successes.
Finally, do take a moment to enjoy the exhibitions on display in the café and around the building – they showcase fantastic learner work and creativity.
We wish you a positive, successful and enjoyable summer term.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Library may need to close temporarily over the coming weeks, sometimes at short notice. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Please note that the college holds the right to close the library at any time without prior notice.
We’re doing everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum and return to normal as soon as possible, but we’re unable to confirm how long this may continue.
Our café team—Semir, Murat, and Cansu have spent the past term getting to know our college community, including your preferences for food, drinks, and timings throughout the day. Based on your feedback, they’ll be introducing updated menu options over the next two weeks.
You can look forward to a variety of freshly prepared items made daily using locally sourced ingredients, including a new selection of toasted sandwiches, wraps, and soups.
We’ve also listened to your feedback on pricing. After review, prices will remain competitive and generally lower than those of nearby cafés. The team is committed to offering high-quality food at great value, while managing rising ingredient costs. Pricing will continue to be reviewed regularly.
There will soon be new ways for you to share feedback directly with the café team, including suggestions for future menu options.
We’re also pleased to share that the issue with the coffee vending machine has now been resolved, and it is expected to be fully operational from Monday, 27 April.
Finally, the café will now be open until 7:30 pm. This is being trialled until the May half-term break and will be reviewed based on demand. When the café is closed, drinks and snacks will still be available via the vending machines.
GCSE English learners shine
Our GCSE English learners have completed their Speaking and Listening assessments. Presentations covered a wide range of topics—from science and social media to religion and psychology—showcasing both creativity and critical thinking.
Assessments are currently being moderated, with final grades expected by the end of the week. Learners will then have the opportunity to appeal their results if needed.
Strong results in Functional Skills English
Functional Skills English learners are receiving their Reading exam results this week, and we’re pleased to share an impressive 88% pass rate. Congratulations to all learners on this fantastic achievement!
New course: Sustainability Award (Level 1)
We’re excited to launch our new online Sustainability Award Level 1 course, starting on Wednesday, 29 April.
This flexible course is ideal for learners who prefer to study remotely while working towards a valuable qualification. With a 95% pass rate in previous Sustainability Award courses, it’s a great opportunity to build knowledge and skills in this important area.
For more information, please visit our website or contact Patricia Ingunza.
Please remember to carry your ID card with you at all times while on college premises.
If you arrive without your ID, you will be required to obtain either a replacement card or a temporary day pass in line with college procedures.
Please note that failure to present a valid ID may result in refusal of entry. Repeated instances may also be treated as a breach of college policies.
We also kindly ask that all learners treat reception staff with courtesy and respect at all times.

Curriculum administrator
Hello, I’m Jozi, and I work at WM College as a Curriculum Administrator for Community and Maths.
My role involves supporting both learners and teaching staff to ensure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. I manage offsite enrolments within the community, including checking eligibility requirements, entering learner data into our systems, and generating learning agreements.
I also work closely with the maths team, helping with room bookings, contacting learners, printing exams, and creating spreadsheets and timetables. These tasks support lesson planning and help monitor individual learner progress throughout their studies.
I enjoy being part of a team that helps create accessible learning opportunities and supports learners at every stage of their journey.
You will receive a text reminder the day before your exam, including your exam time and room number.
If you have any questions, please email the exams department – exams@wmcollege.ac.uk

This month, we are delighted to recognise our learner, Badria
We are proud to recognise Badria as our Learner of the Month. Badria is our dedicated maths learner who returned to education after a long career as a science teacher. She joined the course to keep her mind active and to enjoy learning alongside others, and she has brought a wonderful energy to the class.
Badria’s commitment to learning is truly admirable. She attends every session and is always punctual, showing how much she values the opportunity to learn and take part. Even while managing ongoing health challenges, she continues to show determination and resilience in the classroom. Her passion for maths is clear in every lesson. Badria approaches each activity with enthusiasm and curiosity, always willing to engage, try new approaches, and challenge herself. Her positive attitude towards learning is inspiring to see. Badria is also a very supportive member of the group. She is warm, encouraging, and always ready to celebrate the achievements of others. Her classmates often share how much they appreciate her kindness and the motivation they feel from seeing her dedication.
She brings wisdom, positivity, and a genuine love of learning to every session. Badria truly represents the spirit of lifelong learning and reminds us all that it is never too late to keep exploring new ideas.
Congratulations, Badria, and thank you for being such an inspiring part of the class.

Deaf Awareness Week is a chance to recognise Deaf and hard-of-hearing people and think about how we can make our college more inclusive for everyone.
At WM College, inclusion is everyone’s responsibility. Many barriers Deaf people face are not because of hearing loss, but due to communication and a lack of awareness. Small changes can make a big difference.
Why it matters
Clear communication helps all learners feel confident, included, and able to take part fully in classes and college life.
Simple ways to be inclusive:
Understanding Deaf culture
Deafness is not just a condition—it’s also a cultural identity. Many Deaf people use British Sign Language (BSL) and are part of a strong and vibrant community.
For learners:

Mental Health Awareness Week is a reminder to take care of our wellbeing and support those around us.
Many of our learners balance study with work, family, and other responsibilities. Looking after your mental health is just as important as your physical health.
Why it matters
Learning as an adult can be rewarding, but also challenging. Stress, deadlines, and life pressures can affect how we feel. Being aware of this helps us support ourselves and others.
Simple ways to support your wellbeing:
Looking out for each other:
If you need extra support:
It’s okay to ask for help. Many learners face similar challenges, and support is always available.
Have you signed up for this term’s Learner Forum?
This is your chance to share your thoughts, ideas, compliments, and feedback in a relaxed and open setting. We’re especially keen to hear from learners representing their classmates, so if you’re bringing group feedback, your voice is even more valuable.
Whether you have suggestions for improvement or want to highlight what’s working well, we’d love to hear from you.
