Why our brains need more than just stimulation

In a world of doomscrolling and “brain rot”, our brains are constantly being fed information – but are we really putting them to work?

We scroll, swipe and consume content almost endlessly. From short-form videos to social media feeds, there’s always something new competing for our attention. Our brains are rarely short of stimulation, but stimulation isn’t necessarily the same as active engagement.

Much of what we consume online requires very little from us beyond watching, scrolling and moving on to the next piece of content. So, what happens when we give our brains something that requires us to actively think, remember, problem-solve and participate?

That’s where learning a new language comes in.

How learning a language keeps your brain active

Researchers at Cambridge University Press looked at what happens inside the brain when we learn a language. The mix of learning something new and practising it regularly is part of what makes language learning such good exercise for the brain. Studies also suggest it can help protect against dementia and other brain conditions as we get older. Learning a language is one of the hardest things your brain can do, which is exactly why it’s such a good workout for it, no matter your starting point.

The benefits of learning a new language

Learning a new language comes with plenty of benefits that go beyond being able to communicate in another language. It can challenge your brain, build your confidence and encourage you to stay curious and engaged. Here are just some of the ways learning a language can give your mind a workout:

Keeps your brain active

  • Learning a language gives your brain something new to work on rather than simply consuming information. Unlike passively taking in content, it requires you to listen, understand, recall and respond – every conversation presents a small puzzle for your brain to solve.

Challenges your concentration

  • Listening and responding in another language encourages you to stay focused and engaged. It challenges your concentration, memory, flexibility and confidence all at once.

Exercises your memory

  • Recalling vocabulary, phrases and sentence structures gives your memory a regular workout. Learning a language involves repetition and active recall: practising something, forgetting it, retrieving it, and gradually making it stick.

Encourages mental flexibility

  • Moving between languages means adapting to different words, sounds and ways of communicating – training your brain to switch gears rather than stay on autopilot.

Gets you thinking

  • When you don’t know the right word, your brain has to make connections, work things out and find another way to express yourself. It’s problem-solving in real time.

Builds confidence

  • Using a new language in real-life situations can help you become more comfortable communicating with others – and that confidence tends to carry over into other areas of life.

Makes you more aware

  • Learning a language encourages you to listen carefully and notice sounds, patterns and details you might normally overlook.

Opens your mind to new perspectives

  • Language is closely connected to culture, so learning one can introduce you to different ways of communicating and seeing the world.

It’s never too early or too late to learn something new and give your brain a fresh challenge.
