On Saturday, 13 September 2025, we’re opening our doors for a special day.

Discover the hidden treasures of our Grade II listed Edwardian building, the oldest surviving adult education institute in Europe, while also exploring the wide range of courses for 2025/26 that could transform your next chapter.

What’s happening on the day:

  • View our facilities. A place supported by the likes of: Thomas Hughes, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Ruskin, Ford Maddox Brown and Octavia Hill
  • Meet our friendly staff and find the right course for you
  • Explore our exciting new courses for 2025/26 — whether you’re looking to upskill, develop a new craft, or boost your health and wellbeing, we have something for everyone
  • If your chosen course requires an assessment, you can complete it on the day and get help with enrolment

Important information:

  • For ESOL classes, assessments and enrolments won’t take place during the Open Event. Our ESOL team manages these through pre-booked appointments throughout the year. Call us to find out more.
  • This event may be photographed. By attending, you grant permission for the College to capture and use photographs and videos of you for promotional purposes related to the event.

Lunch and Learn: International Women’s Day Panel

Come celebrate International Women’s Day with us at our Learn at Lunch discussion panel! This FREE event is for everyone featuring an inspiring panel of remarkable women speakers from a variety of fields. They will share their personal stories, discuss the power of allyship, and explore meaningful ways to create positive change while promoting gender equality.

Set in the historic surroundings of our Grade II listed building, this event promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking exploration of the challenges, triumphs, and lessons learned by these incredible women. You’ll leave feeling inspired, with fresh insights on how to build a successful career while staying true to yourself and driving positive change, along with a renewed passion for allyship and making a real difference.

The panel and guest speakers include:

Key discussion topics:

  • Personal journeys: Each panelist will share their unique experiences, reflecting on their careers and the obstacles they’ve faced as women in leadership roles.
  • Allyship: Discussions around allyship and how men, women, and organisations can better support one another to create more inclusive environments for all.
  • Words of wisdom: Panellists will offer personal advice and motivational messages to the audience, addressing ways to navigate the professional landscape while staying true to one’s values.

 

This event provides a rare opportunity to not only access our remarkable grade II listed building but also hear from influential women about their journey toward success, the importance of allyship. It’s also a chance to reflect on the continued progress towards gender equality and the role everyone can play in that effort.

African and Caribbean Folklore Day: Celebrating the birth of Birago Diop

Celebrating Birago Day

We’re pleased to welcome back Natty Mark Samuels to host an afternoon interactive workshop celebrating the spiritual significance of Africa and Caribbean Folklore.

We are excited to welcome back Natty Mark Samuels for a special Birago Day workshop, titled “Love and Bula: Folklore and Cuisine”. This interactive session will explore the rich cultures of Ethiopia, Antigua, and Zambia, blending storytelling and culinary traditions.

During this event, Natty Mark Samuels will be celebrating Birago Diop (1906-1989), a Senegalese poet and storyteller who brought African folktales back into the spotlight. Known for his work in the Négritude movement, Diop was a true “African Renaissance man” – a writer, diplomat, and veterinarian.

Featuring performances by the choir, drummers, jazz band, blues ensemble and reggae band.

Showcasing classical and pop/jazz guitar learners, singers, performance poets, actors and stand-up comics.

Christmas Craft Sale

Join us for a festive opportunity to buy Christmas gifts, handmade by WM College learners on a variety of arts courses.

Mince pies & Christmas drinks will be available for a small donation to support our college’s projects. Items range from £10 – £100. Please bring cash to purchase where possible.

Please enter via the Camden Street entrance, the event will be held in The Maurice Hall.

 

The Tamarind Conversations with Natty Mark Samuels

At WM College we celebrate the culture, history and vibrant diversity of the local communities within Camden and the surrounding areas.

To celebrate Black History Season we are once again welcoming guest speaker Natty Mark Samuels to host a workshop which will explore the play ‘The Tamarind Conversations’. This seven act play, pays homage to Lois Mailou Jones, featuring Maya Angelou and Nina Simone. Natty Mark Samuels will lead the conversations with a focus on art and iconic women, as well as folklore and history. There will also be discussions around the use of space over the years, particularly gardens in urban communities. Interactive, the workshop will include participatory chanting, brain teasers  and group reading.

Natty Mark Samuels is the author of The Encyclopaedia of Rootical Folklore Plant Tales from Africa and the Diaspora and the founder of African School.

PLEASE NOTE: There is essential building works taking place at our Crowndale Road site from Monday 21st October for two weeks, finishing by Monday November 4th.  During this time, and for your safety, our usual entrance will be temporarily closed to all.

There will be an alternative entrance located at the front of the building near the corner of Camden Street, with signs in place to guide you. There are steps at this entrance so please contact us if you have any mobility issues learnerservice@wmcollege.ac.uk

Join us on Saturday 14 Saturday 2024 as we open the doors to the oldest surviving adult education institute in Europe. As part of Open House Festival 2024 we will be welcoming the public to discover the hidden treasures of our historic college, founded in 1854.

Learn about our early supporters such as Thomas Hughes, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Ruskin, Ford Maddox Brown and Octavia Hill  and tour our outstanding grade II listed Edwardian building, purpose designed by W.D. Caröe in 1904.

This is also the perfect opportunity to find out about all our courses, speak to our friendly staff and discover something new.
