This September, WM College is delighted to once again take part in Open House Festival 2026, allowing visitors to explore our remarkable Grade II listed building, discover over 170 years of history and experience the unique atmosphere that has inspired generations of adult learners.

Whether you’re passionate about architecture, social history, heritage or lifelong learning, this is a rare opportunity to step inside one of London’s hidden gems.

Explore the UK’s Oldest Adult Education College

Founded in 1854 as the Working Men’s College, WM College has been at the forefront of adult education for more than 170 years. Our building on Crowndale Road, Camden, is rich in history, beautiful architecture and stories of pioneering educational reformers who believed learning should be accessible to everyone.

Join us on 12 September as we delve deeper into the College with two free one-hour talk and guided tours.

The talk and tour include:

• The story of the College’s founding in 1854 by pioneering educational reformers including Frederick Denison Maurice and Thomas Hughes, and its move to Crowndale Road in 1905.
• An introduction to architect W.D. Caroe and the building’s distinctive blend of Queen Anne, Baroque Classicism, Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau influences.
• Guided visits to some of the College’s most significant spaces, including the Library, Maurice Hall, Room 305 (the original Staff and Student Common Room) and the Ruskin Gallery.
• A look inside the beautifully restored library, inspired by Sir Christopher Wren’s library at Trinity College, Cambridge.
• How the College continues to balance the conservation of its historic Grade II listed building with the needs of a modern adult education provider.
• Rare archive material revealing key moments from the College’s 170-year history.
• Stories of notable figures associated with the College, including John Ruskin, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Octavia Hill.
• A chance to explore the Ruskin Gallery and view artwork created by WM College learners in 2026, showcasing the creativity and talent of today’s adult learners.
