Do you need to do an IELTS course?

Sometimes, to meet the entry requirements of British universities, certain jobs, or visa applications, you may need to show your English language skills as a non-native speaker by providing your IELTS score.

What is IELTS?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an internationally recognised qualification, accredited by the British Council. It tests your ability in four key skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing.
You’ll receive a score from 1 to 9, with each band representing a different level of English proficiency. The score you need will depend on the purpose of the test, whether for education, employment, or immigration.

About the IELTS preparation course

Our academic IELTS course is designed to get you ready for the exam through structured and supportive teaching.

Duration: 25 hours
Format: 10 weekly evening sessions
Session Length: 2.5 hours per class

Although we will prepare you with some language teaching, such as paraphrasing, you should already be at the B2 level of English.

What you’ll learn on this IELTS course

We will help you with:

  • Exam techniques and time management
  • Practice tests and a full mock exam
  • Finding ways to avoid common mistakes
  • Speaking and writing support

Homework will be set each week, and regular attendance and punctuality are essential for success. We strongly encourage you to develop your English outside of class as well, for the best results, including speaking, reading widely, and listening to English in a variety of contexts.

Learning outside the classroom

To get the best results, we strongly encourage you to continue developing your English outside of class. This includes:

  • Speaking English regularly
  • Reading widely in English
  • Listening to English in a variety of formats (e.g. podcasts, news, conversation)

How to enrol

Before joining the course, we will invite you to a discovery session. During this, we’ll assess your English level and carry out a short interview to make sure the course is right for you. After this session, we’ll provide an estimated IELTS score we believe you can achieve.

Please also note, WM College is not an IELTS test centre, but we can guide you to an accredited centre where you can book and pay for your exam. You will be given a course book as part of your course.
