This course provides an excellent opportunity to develop good observational skills, drawing directly from the life model. You will learn ways of representing the figure in line and tone to describe both proportion and structure. You will have the opportunity to work across a range of approaches and use different drawing media. The tutor uses examples of relevant artists work to inspire and support your learning.

The course will cover all fundamental life-drawing principles. These will centre around three main areas: the bone structure of the body, the building of the body�s form and the placing of the form in space. These areas will be explored by observing the nude figure, the clothed figure, the figure in action and the portrait. Further understanding will be underpinned by frequent visual references made to relevant periods in art history.

This course is suitable for beginners who wish to learn the basics of life drawing and how to experiment with different drawing techniques using with pastels. There will be an introduction with a warm-up of brief poses and then one or two sustained poses for the rest of the session. Each week, you will learn ways of representing different objects, still life set ups, or the figure, using painting materials, skills, and techniques. Through experimentation you will develop an understanding of colour mixing, paint application and ways to construct an image. You will also be shown examples of relevant artists work to inspire and support your learning.

This course will introduce you to the essentials of oil painting and support you to develop your technique. Topics covered will include how to organise your palette, control colour mixing and blending, and what mediums to use to alter the handling qualities of the paint. You will learn the different terms used in oil painting techniques such as glazing and impasto, with artist and lecturer: Alison Kusner.

Experience and explore the many beautiful and translucent qualities of watercolour painting. Watercolour has an amazing range of qualities and has much potential to explore for the beginner, or even for the experienced artist. You will learn techniques such as: wash, layering of colour and brush handling. Using the wonderful medium of watercolour, you will learn to create still live and landscapes and develop your own work, whilst challenging your perception of what watercolour can do.
