Qualifications

Level 1 Fashion
This year WMC is offering a fashion design and pattern cutting award for students keen to progress beyond the personal use of pattern making. This term-long course is an introduction to fashion design, pattern cutting and sewing combined in one exciting programme. Taught in WMC’s own fashion studio, this course not only helps you to develop practical, fashion-related skills like designing, drafting patterns and sewing garments but also focuses on improving your study skills for effective research, note-taking, reflective writing, problem-solving and presenting information.

Level 2 Fashion Design and Pattern Cutting

This course will help to prepare you for employment in the fashion industry as a pattern cutter, garment tech or similar. You will develop skills such as designing, making patterns, sewing and fitting in order that you are able to create garment specification sheets and illustrations to showcase your design work. In WMC’s own fashion studio, your tutors will impart knowledge and skills honed during years of industry experience as designers, pattern cutters and garment technicians.

Non-accredited Courses

Sewing and Garment Construction (Beginners/Intermediate)

On this course you will learn how to sew using professional techniques. You will learn how to use a sewing machine and create a portfolio of sewing samples and finishing techniques for future
reference. You will also look at different aspects of sewing and garment construction that are used in the industry.
Returning learners will have the chance to use the skills learnt during the course to construct a toile for a basic garment in calico through extension tasks agreed with the tutor.

Pattern Cutting (Beginners)

This course is a great introduction for anyone who is interested in gaining an understanding of how garments are constructed and made to fit. It is a great first step into the world of fashion and making your own custom clothing. You will learn how to draft a standard size 12 block and begin to understand how professional pattern cutters manipulate shapes to create exciting design options. Content is broken down over 5-weeks. All courses follow on from each other, however, it is possible to take them individually. Should you choose to continue your study beyond your five weeks you will have the opportunity to learn further garment and design options. There are also optional challenging extension tasks built into each term.

Pattern Cutting (Beginners/Intermediate)

This course is for anyone who is interested in gaining an understanding of how garments are constructed and made to fit. It is a great first step into the world of fashion. Working step by
step you will create technical and mathematically accurate paper outcomes. You will begin to understand how professional pattern cutters manipulate shapes to create exciting design options.
Content is broken down into five week terms. All courses follow on from each other however it is possible to take them individually.
Should you choose to continue your study beyond your initial five weeks you will have the opportunity to learn further garment and design options. There are also optional challenging extension tasks built into each term.

Pattern Cutting (Intermediate/Advanced)

This course is for you if you want to develop your pattern cutting skills further and attain professional techniques for use in personal projects, work place, university, further study or just for fun. Learn how to draft pattern blocks from scratch and/or bring your own blocks or commercial patterns to develop into unique designs using dart manipulations, draping or style lines. Extend your 2D to 3D skills transferring your own fashion designs to patterns and garments. Practice fit analysis and transform patterns to fit perfectly.

Clothes Making Using Commercial Patterns

Learn to make your own clothes on this sewing course aimed at beginners and those who want to further develop their garment construction skills. This is a project-based course, each term we will be sewing a different garment, using a purchased pattern. An experienced tutor will demonstrate sewing techniques and guide you step by step through choosing the right pattern size, laying out your pattern pieces and cutting out the fabric. You will learn how to adjust patterns for individual fit, cut out fabric and use a sewing machine to make a fashionable garment.

Make Your Own Dress (Beginners/Intermediate)

This course is a foundation for learning how to pattern cut and sew dresses from conception to a finished bespoke garment. You will learn how to take measurements and how to create a classic fitted dress block for woven fabrics, how to sew a toile and how to do fittings. This will then become a master pattern unique to you. Once you have mastered the basics you will be taught how to create different styles from the basic block. Content is broken down over 5-weeks. All courses follow on from each other, however, it is possible to take them individually. Should you choose to continue your study beyond your five weeks you will have the opportunity to learn further garment and design options. There are also optional challenging extension tasks built into each term for more advanced learners.

Build a Fashion Portfolio: Design and Realisation

This course is designed to guide and support you through creating your own unique and individual portfolio. You will learn how to refine, assemble and showcase your creative ideas, develop concepts, gather research and designs and communicate your ideas effectively. You will learn approaches to fashion drawing, sketchbook techniques, working between 2D and 3D, documenting development, pattern cutting, sewing and embellishment.

Garment Construction (Beginners)

Discover how to make your own clothes using professional sewing methods. Working with a commercial pattern, we will take a structured, step-by-step approach. You will learn to sew important finishing details and achieve a technically accurate clean, crisp finish for your garments. This course is a fantastic introduction into the world of fashion and sewing. All courses follow on from each other, with a different garment type each term however it is possible to take these courses individually. There are also optional extension tasks built into each term.

Learn to Sew: Total Beginners

Join us for this one-day fun and supportive class and you will learn all the basics of sewing. During the morning you’ll learn how to set up and operate a domestic sewing machine and produce a range of stitch samples including basic seams, French seams, hemming, binding and zigzag finishing. We’ll move on to learn basic pattern language, cutting techniques and garment construction techniques such as darts and pleats. You’ll leave with a set of instructions, and your sewing samples.

Saturday Pattern Cutting (Beginners)

This course is for anyone who is interested in gaining an understanding of how garments are constructed and made to fit. It is a great first step into the world of fashion.
You will learn how to draft a fitted block according to individual measurements and gain an understanding of how to use darts to achieve different design options. You will Discover the professional approach to the discipline of pattern cutting for fashion. Working step by step you will create technical and mathematically accurate paper outcomes.

Make Your Own Bag

Over this two-day course you will learn the skills of making your own bags and accessories. By choosing from two different bag designs you will learn cutting techniques and construction methods to produce your own bag. You will build your confidence on the sewing machine while learning how to work with various heavier weight fabrics and tools that can be used also to develop your own accessories. You will leave with your own bag, a template and instructions.

Couture Sewing Techniques (Beginners)

Discover the world of Couture sewing in this one-day workshop. Focusing mostly on hand sewing with a little machine sewing you will have the opportunity to develop your technical skills even further. You will accomplish several hand sewn techniques that will allow you to finish garments to a couture standard. You will be guided through each seam and stitch and by the end of the course you will have your own range of test samples and instructions to take away and refer back to

  • Do you have a full programme in fashion design and textile course for 2 to 3years. It may be full time or part time

      We don’t have a long term fashion programme over 2 to 3 years, only a year long one or you can take up several shorter courses over the year over a number of years depending on how much you want to study. Thanks
