Working in schools and nurseries: Introduction to BSL

Course Description

An introduction to British Sign Language taster course for anyone wishing to learn about Deaf Awareness and sign language in a childcare setting. This short course will give confidence to learners wanting to communicate with deaf, hard of hearing, pre-verbal and non-verbal children. The course covers everyday greetings and instructions, BSL nursery rhymes and simple story telling activities.

Course Content

The course will cover some of the basic signs used for everyday communication

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching methods are varied and will include; presentation, demonstration and practical work

Independent Learning

You will be expected to practice your signs in between classes


You will be continually assessed throughout the course

Qualification you will achieve

There is no formal qualification for this course but a college certificate is available on request from your tutor after the end of the course

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.
