Wood Carving - Mixed Level

Course Description

This course has been designed for learners of a variety of levels and covers chip carving, low relief carving and carving in three dimensions. You will learn to draw and cut your own designs. All basic materials provided. Larger and specialist woods available to purchase.

Course Requirements

No previous knowledge is necessary. Beginners, as well as experienced learners are welcome. We recommend you enrol for a whole term to get the most out of the course. If you are interested in a specialist technique not listed or described in the course description, please contact the Curriculum manager before enrolling, to find out if it is possible for us to accommodate this.

Course Content

You will learn to carve low reliefs and chip carving patterns, extending to advanced pattern carving for decorative sculptures. You will explore a range of carved objects and also learn the importance and methods of maquette (model) making for 3D carving. Types of wood and sharpening techniques for the relevant tools will be covered. You will receive an allocation of wood free with your course. If you want to use a larger piece or buy a specialist type of wood, you can purchase this from your tutor at cost price. You can also bring you own wood, but please discuss this with your tutor beforehand to make sure it's suitable. Your tutor can also refer you to suppliers where you can buy your own wood if you prefer.

Teaching and Learning Methods

There is no formal homework, however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, gigs or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Once you have completed the course you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject in the Creative Arts department. For Art and Design courses, once you have developed a portfolio of work you could consider applying to the Foundation Diploma in Art and design as a Pathway in to Higher Education. Studio courses are for those learners with some subject knowledge or who have been studying the same subject at the college for 3 full years. Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer.
