Wood Carving (Beginners/Intermediate)

Course Description

This course has been designed for learners of a variety of levels and covers chip carving, low relief carving and carving in three dimensions. You will learn to draw and cut your own designs, make useful household objects, like spoons, and carve small sculptures of your own design. Larger carvings can also be made. We will look into sharpening techniques, timber identification, planning (including maquette making), carving shapes and finally learning surface finishes.

Course Content

You will learn to carve low reliefs and chip carving patterns, extending to advanced pattern carving for decorative sculptures. You will explore a range of carved objects and also learn the importance and methods of maquette (model) making for 3D carving. Types of wood and sharpening techniques for the relevant tools will be covered.

Teaching and Learning Methods

In the first session the teacher will check your skills and your personal goals for the course and if you find the course is not right for you, you will be advised on a more suitable course.

Beginners will follow a more structured programme whilst more experienced learners can work on their own projects if desired.

Working at your own pace, you will be given feedback on your progress. At the end of the course the tutor will assess your progress and advise you on the next step.

The programme is taught through tutor demonstration, group discussions, sharing skills and knowledge within the group and most importantly through developing your own practice.

Independent Learning

There is no formal homework, however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, gigs or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.


There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course.

Qualification you will achieve

There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.
