Course Description

This course has been designed for learners of a variety of levels and covers chip carving, low relief carving and carving in three dimensions. You will learn to draw and cut your own designs. All basic materials provided. Larger and specialist woods available to purchase.

Location: Camden

Course Requirements

If you are woodcarving, a 1/3 of a cubit foot of wood is included in your fee per course. Should you want to make something larger than this, you will need to pay for the extra wood. Some speciality wood is not included in the free allocation, and you will need to pay for this before use. Purchase of wood can be made during your course via our internal payment system.
If you are interested in a specialist technique not listed or described in the course description, please contact before enrolling to find out if it is possible for us to accommodate this.

Course Content

You will learn to carve low reliefs and chip carving patterns, extending to advanced pattern carving for decorative sculptures. You will explore a range of carved objects and also learn the importance and methods of maquette (model) making for 3D carving. Types of wood and sharpening techniques for the relevant tools will be covered. You will receive an allocation of wood free with your course. If you want to use a larger piece or buy a specialist type of wood, you can purchase this from your tutor at cost price. You can also bring you own wood, but please discuss this with your tutor beforehand to make sure it's suitable. Your tutor can also refer you to suppliers where you can buy your own wood if you prefer.
