Course Description

If you would like to start learning a stringed instrument, this is the course for you. Ukulele is an excellent starting point to learn how to play and the course will allow you do this in a group setting, performing popular songs as well as learning the basics of the instrument. Learning a musical instrument is a positive step for wellbeing and personal confidence and the ukulele is a great starting point.

Course Requirements

As this is a beginners course the only requirement is that you bring your enthusiasm and commitment. Be prepared to work hard and enjoy learning an instrument which are available at the College. Ideally, you will be prepared to purchase your own instrument once you are happy that this class is right for you. You will also be expected to complete an Individual Learning Plan to help support your progress.

Course Content

The course will focus upon individual instrumental skills and also how you work together to play music. It will involve some music theory and the development of listening skills. You will also get the opportunity to perform some simple songs as a group.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will learn through, practical activities, group exercises and peer assessment, listening and analysis, demonstration and discussion, use of supporting online materials, individual practice, use of ILT and continuous assessment. There is no homework associated with the sessions but please do discuss extension activities with your tutor.

Independent Learning

You will be expected to work independently to develop your ukulele technique. The focus should be on instrumental practice but should also include developing your understanding of music theory.

Assessment

You will be continually assessed through your practical activities and will receive feedback in a variety of ways such as peer assessment, verbal and written feedback from your teacher. This is a non-accredited course but a certificate of completion can be provided by the College on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Once you have completed the course, you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject. Advice and Guidance for all further study is available from the Curriculum Manager by request.

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.
