Stand Up Comedy

Course Description

Our Stand-Up Comedy course will introduce you to the techniques of creating and performing your own comedy material. The course will look at the practical aspects of stand-up such as how to create material, developing performance skills and how to create your own comic persona. The sessions will be fun, inclusive and cater for those with experience as well as beginners. The course will also offer the opportunity to perform your creative work in front of an audience.

Course Requirements

This course is suitable for all levels, from beginners to those with some experience who want to refresh their knowledge and hone their performance skills. Previous experience of performing may help get the most from the course but this skill is not required. You will also need to complete an Individual Learning Plan.

Course Content

During this course, you will look at how to develop your own material including an introduction to areas such as joke structure. The course will also focus on how to develop your performance skills which includes a variety of disciplines such as building confidence, using mics and dealing with an audience. Finally, the course will cover how to develop a stage persona and discover your own personal comic attitude. Please note, although you will be introduced to all the above over a single term, the course is developmental over the whole year.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will learn through, practical activities, group exercises and peer assessment, listening and analysis, demonstration and discussion, use of supporting online materials, individual practice, use of ILT and continuous assessment. There is no homework associated with the sessions but please do discuss extension activities with your tutor.

Assessment

You will be continually assessed through your practical activities and will receive feedback in a variety of ways such as peer assessment, verbal and written feedback from your teacher. This is a non-accredited course, but a certificate of completion can be provided by the College on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Once you have completed the course, you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject. Advice and Guidance for all further study is available from the Curriculum Manager by request.

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.
