Singing 1: Find Your Own Voice - Beginner/Mixed Level

Course Description

If you like singing and want to explore performance, this is the course for you. You will be guided through a healthy vocal routine and learn techniques and tips to enhance your singing through a variety of exercises. We will sing songs from different styles such as Pop, Rock, Blues, Art Song, Folk, Soul and Jazz to find the genre that suits your voice. Get ready to perform in class as part of a group, or solo.

Course Requirements

Singers should be able to pitch correctly from notes played on a piano and / or guitar. If you think you are an absolute beginner, we recommend to enrol on Singing for Beginners. Bring a bottle of water and something to take notes. You can audio-record, bringing your own devices. However, no video recording is allowed. You will also be expected to complete an Individual Learning Plan to help support your progress. This course requires a little previous experience, and it focuses on techniques. You need to be willing to learn from practising, discussing, reading, listening to others and performing. And, of course, do not forget to bring your enthusiasm!

Course Content

On this course, you will learn through - warm-up techniques, vocal technique activities and exercises to build skills for the chosen songs. You will also cover activities to help develop style and interpretation. Please note - although you will be introduced to all the above over a single term (10-weeks), the course is developmental over the whole year.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will learn through, practical activities, group exercises and peer assessment, listening and analysis, demonstration and discussion, use of supporting online materials, individual practice, use of ILT and continuous assessment. There is no homework associated with the sessions but please do discuss extension activities with your tutor.

Independent Learning

You will be expected to work independently to develop your practical singing skills. The focus should be on vocal practice but may also include researching material to perform and developing an understanding of basic music theory.

Assessment

You will be continually assessed through your practical activities and will receive feedback in a variety of ways such as peer assessment, verbal and written feedback from your teacher. This is a non-accredited course, but a certificate of completion can be provided by the College on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Once you have completed the course, you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject. Advice and Guidance for all further study is available from the Curriculum Manager by request.

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs.
