Course Content

This course will look at a variety of approaches to making sculpture with sustainable and recycled materials. We will look at land artists such as Andy Goldsworthy and Richard Long, contemporary artists using natural materials such as Patrick Dougherty and Nicola Hicks and artists using recycled materials such as Michelle Reader and Sandi M Sutton. Learners will first follow a set program of experimentation with a variety of sustainable and recycled materials including earth clay, cob, straw, willow and recycled metal, plastic and paper. We will look at the properties, techniques and limitations of these materials and will then use the last session to develop an independent piece using the materials and techniques that we have learned. Learners can progress onto develop these skills in either the sculpture studio or mixed level courses at WMC, or other specific technique-based courses elsewhere.
