Sculpture for all levels: explore techniques and produce a personal piece
Course Overview
Develop your sculptural skills in a supportive studio environment while exploring a range of materials, processes, and approaches. Guided by an experienced tutor, you will learn how to generate ideas, experiment, and create unique forms inspired by your own interests.
You will work with a variety of materials including clay, wood, wire, plaster, cement, papier mâché, and mixed media, to explore techniques such as modelling, carving, and casting. Through this process, you will develop practical skills and create an original sculptural piece.
Returning students can continue personal projects, further refining techniques and processes.
Basic materials and tools are provided.

Who is this course for and what will I learn?
This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with prior experience who wish to continue to develop and extend their sculptural practice. It is for anyone interested in working with sculptural materials while building confidence in a creative and supportive environment.
You will explore a wide range of materials, including clay, wood, wire, plaster, cement, wax, paper, and mixed media. The course introduces key sculptural techniques such as modelling, carving, casting, and mould-making, supported by demonstrations and one-to-one guidance.
Teaching is tailored to individual progress, enabling beginners to build core skills while supporting more experienced learners in developing independent and ambitious work.
On this course you will learn to:
- Explore sources of inspiration of historical and contemporary sculptors and record visual inspiration through drawing and photography
- Develop ideas through sketches and maquettes (scale models)
- Use a range of materials, and experiment with sculptural techniques to create a personal sculptural piece
- Safely and effectively use tools and materials in a studio setting

How will I learn?
Learning takes place through a combination of demonstrations, hands-on practice, one-to-one tuition, group discussion, and independent project work. Small class sizes (maximum 10 learners) ensure personalised support and feedback.
You will work at your own pace, with teaching adapted to suit different experience levels, learning styles, and creative goals. Visual and written materials will support your learning, and all resources are also available in accessible digital formats.
Basic materials are provided. Clay must be purchased through the college and is charged by weight. A range of specialist clays (such as porcelain and black clay) is available from your tutor. If you are woodcarving, one-third of a cubic foot of wood is included in the course fee. Additional or specialist wood must be purchased separately.
There is no formal homework, although your tutor may suggest independent research or sketchbook work to support your development.
Please note: We are unable to accommodate stone carving, bronze casting, or welding.

Frank is a sculptor and fabricator, who has been working both on his own art practice and as a fabricator for other creatives for over 15 years. His practice spans multiple materials, but has a focus on clay, wood and metal, often combining the use of digital and traditional techniques.
