Print Techniques for Ceramic Decoration: Screen Print and Photographic Gum

Course Description

A course to explore photographic print techniques for ceramics using silkscreens and photographic gum. The course will enable you to explore the techniques and make samples that you could use later in your own practice. Experimentation encouraged. Basic material provided, but you can bring your own images to work with, which should be about A5 is size.

Course Requirements

No previous knowledge/qualifications are required. If you are interested in a specialist technique not listed or described in the course description, please contact the Curriculum manager before enrolling, to find out if it is possible for us to accommodate this.

Course Content

Preparation of clay and Bisque-fired Ceramics. Ceramic and print design silk screen printing on clay using paint and oxides. Making silk screen stencils from newsprint. Test printing on leather hard clay and paper Photographic negatives for gum print. How to mix the gum print medium Test print under UV light (exposure timing). Print on bisque-fired Ceramics. Removing gum and firing gum image. How to Glaze your work.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Presentations and looking at relevant artists, makers using the internet, PowerPoint, images, and books. Demonstratiosn, discussion and 1-2-1 tutorial support.

Assessment

There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Once you have completed the course you may choose to enrol on a further term in ceramics, possibly an Accredited L1 orL2 Ceramics course, or another subject in the Creative Arts or Vocational department. For Art and Design courses, once you have developed a portfolio of work you could consider applying to the Foundation Diploma in Art and design as a Pathway in to Higher Education. Studio courses are for those learners with some subject knowledge or who have been studying the same subject at the college for 3 full years. Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer.
