Print Making and Etching From the Life Model (Studio Practice)

Course Description

This course offers you the opportunity to learn a broad range of printmaking techniques and apply those skills to life drawing. You will be able to work directly onto etching plates using hard or soft ground techniques, mono-print, relief print, or work directly onto paper using drawings for photo etching. During this course you can develop your own project and ideas and to focus on specific techniques that interest you. Your tutor will support you with developing your skills and creative practice.

Course Content

The course will include a brief introduction to the historical context of etching and drawing by looking at examples from Rembrandt to Goya and contemporary artists.

You will have the opportunity to develop your drawings directly from a life model over 2 of the 5 weeks, for 2 hours at a time.

The printmaking techniques covered in this course:

Hard and soft ground etching
Aquatint
Oil lift - (painting directly onto a metal plate)
Photocopy of drawings transfer onto a metal plate
Photo - etching.
Colour printing
Zinc etching
Steel etching
Relief printing
Mono-Printing

The studio is fully equipped with a 2 large Rochat printing presses.

Materials will be supplied including inks. There will be additional cost for etching plates and specialist printing paper.

Advice and possibilities for developing work
Group discussion and review of work
Handouts

Independent Learning

There is no formal homework, however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects and research. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, books and websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course.

Qualification you will achieve

There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.
