Print Making and Etching from the Life Model (Studio Practice)

Course Description

On this course you will learn a broad range of printmaking techniques and apply those skills to life drawing. You will be able to work directly onto etching plates using hard or soft ground techniques, mono-print, relief print, or work directly onto paper to make drawings for photo etchings. During this course you can develop your own project and ideas and to focus on specific techniques that interest you. Your tutor will support you with developing your skills and creative practice.

Course Requirements

The course is for those with some experience of printmaking. But beginners are welcome.

Course Content

The course will include a brief introduction to the historical context of etching and drawing by looking at examples from Rembrandt to Goya and contemporary artists. You will have the opportunity to develop your drawings directly from a life model over 2 of the 5 weeks, for 2 hours at a time. The printmaking techniques covered in this course: Hard and soft ground etching Aquatint Oil lift - (painting directly onto a metal plate) Photocopy of drawings transfer onto a metal plate Photo - etching. Colour printing Zinc etching Steel etching Relief printing Mono-Printing The studio is fully equipped with a 2 large Rochat printing presses. Materials will be supplied including inks. There will be additional cost for etching plates and specialist printing paper.

Teaching and Learning Methods

A range of printmaking processes will be demonstrated and you will learn by applying these different techniques to produce your own unique individual prints. There will be opportunities for you to use basic press processes and develop your skills through group and individual 1-2-1 guidance, practice and discussion. Resources, such as handouts, will be used within each lesson and are available electronically. There is no formal homework, however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects and research. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, books and websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Once you have completed the course you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject in the Creative Arts department. For Art and Design courses, once you have developed a portfolio of work you could consider applying to the Foundation Diploma in Art and design as a Pathway in to Higher Education. Studio courses are for those learners with some subject knowledge or who have been studying the same subject at the college for 3 full years. Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs.
