Drawing and Painting - Portraiture

Course Description

Working with models, you will be introduced to various drawing and painting methods for portraiture. This is a great class for those new to portraiture who would like a step-by-step introduction as well as more experienced artists who would like to develop their work. With artist and lecturer: Alison Kusner.

Location: Camden

Course Requirements

No previous knowledge/qualifications are required, although some experience of life drawing or painting would be useful. Experienced students can pursue individual aims at their own level.

Course Content

Students will learn what to observe in the face to achieve a likeness, from key proportions and essential shapes to the behaviour of light and shadow. The course will also cover various painting and drawing techniques from carefully measured to more expressive painterly approaches. You will also be shown examples of artists work to inspire and support your learning. By the end of the course, students will be able to: accurately observe and represent the proportions and structure of the human head and face from different angles; use line, tone and colour in different ways to represent a likeness; and understand and use a range of different drawing and painting techniques.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Each session will begin with an introduction and demonstration of that days activity. Teaching will then take place on a one-to-one basis as students commence their own work. Students are encouraged to learn from each other and the whole class will discuss each others work at the end of each day. Resources used within the lesson are available for students online. No work outside the sessions is required. However, the college has an exciting programme of events, exhibitions and competitions throughout the year. Your tutor will make you aware of these and your participation is welcomed and encouraged. While there is no formal homework; your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, or websites and books for you to use to enrich your study.
