Pattern Cutting and Clothes Making

Course Description

Learn to make your own clothes on this sewing course, aimed at beginners and those who want to further develop their garment making skills. This is a project-based course, where each term we will be sewing a different garment, using a purchased pattern (which you will need to purchase prior to starting). The tutor will guide you step by step through choosing the correct pattern size, how to adjust patterns for individual fit, lay out your pattern pieces and cut out the fabric.

Course Content

A different garment type is taught each ten-week term:

For the Autumn term you will be sewing a skirt. This will cover; suitable fabrics, adjusting the pattern, laying up and cutting out the fabric, using a sewing machine and over-locker. The sewing techniques covered will include; inserting a zip, various seams, attaching a waistband, hems and optional lining.
You will need to purchase: Simplicity Misses & Miss Petite Amazing Fit Skirt pattern number 1541.


For the Spring tern you will be sewing a top. This will cover; suitable fabrics, adjusting the pattern, laying up and cutting out the fabric, using a sewing machine and over-locker. The sewing techniques covered will include; a button front, various seams, optional collar, setting in sleeves, facings and hems.
You will need to purchase: New Look top pattern number 6598.

For the Summer term you will be sewing a dress. This will cover; suitable fabrics, adjusting the pattern, laying up and cutting out the fabric, using a sewing machine and over-locker. The sewing techniques covered will include; inserting a zip, darts, inserting sleeves, various seams, hems facings and optional lining.
You will need to purchase: Simplicity Misses & Plus size Amazing Fit Dress. Pattern number 1060.

Teaching and Learning Methods

In the first session, the tutor will assess your skills and your personal goals for the course. If the course is not suitable, you will be advised to consider a more suitable course.

You will be working at your own pace and be given verbal and written feedback on your progress. If you have additional learning support needs, you will be signposted to support. At the end of the course, the tutor will assess your progress and advise you on the next step.

The course is taught through a series of tutor led demonstrations and workshops. You will be guided through each technique step by step and engage in a peer review at the end of the course.

All resources used within each lesson are available on our Virtual Learning Portal called iLearn.

Independent Learning

There is no formal homework, however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, gigs or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course.

Qualification you will achieve

There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.
