Level 1 Creative Fashion Design & Pattern Cutting

Course Description

This year WMC is offering a fashion design and pattern cutting award for students keen to progress beyond the personal use of pattern making. Taught in WMC’s own fashion studio, this course not only helps you to develop practical, fashion-related skills like designing, drafting patterns and sewing garments but also focuses on improving your study skills for effective research, note-taking, reflective writing, problem-solving and presenting information.

Location: Camden

Course Content

You will complete three modules: introduction to study skills, fashion design, and pattern cutting and sewing. Students will draft a block pattern to create several designs patterns from. Ideas will be developed from research and design development and by exploring contemporary fashion to inspire fashion forward garment designs. These will be transferred into patterns and samples using industry techniques and finishes. Each unit and development work is recorded in a personal progress log to support students’ critical analysis of their learning on the course.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The course consists of three units which will be taught in an active and student-centred way. Students will create their own pattern blocks from scratch and learn to cut and sew their garments. Fashion design work supports students in creating contemporary garments’ designs. Students will also develop their study and writing skills guided by a literacy tutor with fashion industry experience.
Resources used within each lesson are available for learners on our online learning platform, iLearn.

Independent Learning

In addition to the classes you will be expected to complete patterns, design research and sewing work in independent learning. Access to sufficient table space, equipment and a PC outside of the classroom is advantageous.

There is a formal assessment framework on this course, but no exams. You will need to present a portfolio of practical and written work and meet set deadlines. Work will be formally assessed by your tutor on completion of each project and you will be given feedback to help you improve. All coursework produced will need to be retained by the college for 6-8 weeks after completion of the course until External Verification by OCNLR has taken place.

Qualification you will achieve

On completion of this course you will achieve an OCNLR Level 1 Award in the Creative and Digital Industries (QCF)
