Jewellery and Silversmithing - Saturday Mixed Level

Course Description

On this course, you will be supported and encouraged to explore and develop your own jewellery ideas, designs and practical skills. The emphasis is on developing your creative potential and extending your skills and confidence to work independently in a studio environment. All basic materials and equipment provided, including sheet metal.

Course Content

Students are encouraged to work on and develop their own skills, ideas and projects. For beginners, structure projects and exercises will be provided to buid core skills. Jewellery making techniques like annealing, bending, piercing, filing, soldering, and polishing will be covered. Advanced techniques like stone setting, fold forming, doming and shaping, texturing and decorating metal surfaces, anticlastic raising can be covered too. The tutor will work with you to track and monitor your progress.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will be working at your own pace and be given verbal and written feedback on your progress. At the end of the course, the tutor will give you feedback on your progress and advise you on the next step. The course will be practically taught with demonstrations, presentations, one-to-one and group tuition. Supported independent work will allow each student the time to apply, practice, experiment and develop their skills and knowledge within this course. The course will support the development of your thinking and practice through ongoing evaluation. Emphasis will be placed upon developing your own pieces and developing your practical skills in line with your ideas. Resources used within each lesson are available electronically. In addition to the classes you will be encouraged to keep a notebook/sketchbook to collect inspirational images, make notes, keep technical handouts given by the tutor, and develop your ideas. There is no formal homework, however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects and research. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, gigs or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.
