Singers must be able to pitch notes correctly played from a piano/guitar and must demonstrate solid previous experience in singing. Bring a bottle of water and something to take notes with. You can audio-record bringing your own devices. However, no video recording is allowed. You will also be expected to complete an Individual Learning Plan to help support your progress.
And, of course, do not forget to bring your enthusiasm!
We will explore songs and vocal improvisation and prepare to perform in groups and on your own. Jazz is fun, classy and rough, elegant and crazy, tender and harsh, simply the perfect mix for singing. A great course to challenge yourself and improve your singing. You will learn:
Warm-up and vocal technique activities/exercises
Phrasing and musical variations
Exploring Jazz vocal styles
Please note: although you will be introduced to all the above over a single term (10-weeks), the course is developmental over the whole year. If you sign up for the full three terms (courses A, B and C) at the start of the academic year e.g. August / September you will be entitled to the early bird discount.
Teaching and Learning Methods
You will learn through Practical activities, Peer assessment, Listening and analysis, Demonstration and discussion, Use of supporting online materials (Google Classroom / OneDrive), Individual practice, Use of ILT (computers), Continuous assessment
You will be expected to work independently to develop your practical singing skills. The focus should be on vocal practice but may also include researching material to perform and developing an understanding of basic music theory.
You will be continually assessed through your practical activities and will receive feedback in a variety of ways e.g. peer assessment, verbal and written feedback from your teacher.
Qualification you will achieve
This is a non-accredited course but a certificate of completion can be provided by the College on request.
Next Steps and Progression
Upon successful completion of the course you may be able to progress to accredited courses at Level 1, progress to other singing classes or perform in ensembles at WMC.

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer.
