The centuries-old art, paper marbling is a fun and creative way to decorate paper with stunning patterns. The course will take you through the history of marbling, introduce you to the tools, materials and techniques used in this craft and enable you to experiment with colours, inks and paints to create a variety of traditional and contemporary marbling designs. You will also learn how to use your marbling papers to create unique simple books and stationery.

Course Content
Paper marbling is a centuries-old art technique that involves printing on paper using inks or paints floating on water and creating patterns similar to marble and other stones. Traditionally it was used to create beautiful endpapers and covers for books and to decorate writing material for calligraphy and stationery. In this introductory course, students will gain a basic understanding of the history, techniques, tools and styles of Paper Marbling. You will learn how to set up your marbling tank, prepare paper and card for marbling, mix and manipulate inks with a variety of tools such as brushes, combs and needles. There will be plenty of time for creative experimentation with colours, inks and paints to produce traditional designs and patterns as well as the opportunity to explore your own ideas and create unique designs. At the end of the course, you will have a large selection of marbled papers and you will be shown how to use them in a variety of creative was to make simple books and stationery. Teaching and Learning Methods
This is a workshop environment with a focus on practical learning, with one-to-one, individual tutor support. There will also be group discussions and reviews. Where appropriate the tutors will offer presentations, talks and demonstrations. There will be lots of inspiration using books, Pinterest and the internet Technical handouts will be provided where needed these are available electronically. There is no formal homework; however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects and reasearch. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, events or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment
There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course.
