Introduction to Essential Digital Skills

Course Description

If you have little experience of using computers and you would like progress to a formal qualification than this course will provide you with the foundation IT skills needed for everyday life and for further study. You will become confident in handling different types of devices, connecting to the internet safely and securely, and accessing applications on a device. On completion of this course, you can progress onto Essential Digital Skills Qualification Entry 3

Course Requirements

You should have first completed the Computer Skills for Beginners course. Alternatively, you should be able to turn on a device and find and open apps. Literacy and numeracy skills at a minimum of Entry Level 3 is required.

Course Content

This course will develop your technical skills in five skills areas: Using Devices and Handling Information, Creating and Editing, Communication, Transacting, Being Safe and Responsible Online. You will research the internet using keywords to find information and learn to download files from the Internet. You will create posters and flyers with images and use email to send your work to your tutor.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The course will be delivered using a range of teaching and learning methods which include demonstrations, video tutorials, independent work online from home and homework. Learning will take place mainly onsite (in the classroom) and also online (from home). In addition to the classes, you will be expected to do some additional work between sessions to consolidate and extend your learning.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which will outline the learning objectives for the course. You will also be invited to set your own goals. You will receive feedback against the achievement of these outcomes during the course from your tutor and in written form at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course, but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.
