Introduction to Bookkeeping

Course Description

This course will give you an introduction and insight into the world of Bookkeeping. The recording of financial transactions is part of the process of accounting in business. Transactions include purchases, sales, receipts and payments by an individual or an organisation /corporation. You will familiarise yourself with the language of accounting and learn a range of basic bookkeeping techniques.

Course Content

This course will give you a basic introduction in bookkeeping techniques and familiarise you with basic accounting terms. You will learn and apply a range of basic book-keeping techniques including bank accounts, double?entry book keeping, cash and petty cash accounts and balance sheets.

Teaching and Learning Methods

We want you to achieve to the very best of your ability at WMC. To make this happen we offer both learning and personal support by specialist staff tailored to meet your specific needs.

The teaching, learning and assessment methods used on the course will include: computer based training using accounts software; presentations; group work; discussions; individual timed tasks and directed self-study.

Resources used within each lesson are available for students on the online learning platform, iLearn.

As with all our programmes, this course includes individual reviews, giving you time with your personal tutor to reflect and set targets.

Independent Learning

The skills you are learning should be practised outside college so that you develop and progress. Your practical skills should be supplemented with the study necessary to successfully complete the range of different assessments.

You are advised to find some form of work experience.


Assessment is continuous and takes place throughout the programme by a variety of methods including practical online assessments and written tasks.

Qualification you will achieve

This is a non-accredited course but a certificate of completion can be provided by the College on request.

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.

Additional Costs

WM College provides all the basic materials and equipment you will need to complete the course. Your tutor will advise you where you can buy materials or equipment to extend your study, should you wish. The College also provides additional financial support through the Discretionary Learner Support Fund (DLSF); however there are eligibility criteria that applies. Please refer to the DLSF policy which can be found at the main reception.
