Guitar Essentials: Online

Course Description

In this online guitar course, students will learn guitar basics as well as intermediate techniques. These will include posture, fingerstyle and plectrum techniques, chords, scales, simple/intermediate pieces spacing from classical, Spanish to folk/blues genres of music. The lesson will start with a group introduction to the topic followed by individual sessions. For this course, you need a device with a camera that connects to the Internet and a guitar. Sessions will take place on Zoom.

Course Requirements

This course is suitable for all levels, from beginners to more experienced guitarists who want to refresh their knowledge and hone their playing. However, you will need access to a computer, smartphone or tablet that can allow you to participate in the class and a suitable instrument (classical, acoustic or electric). You are also expected to practise regularly between classes. The teacher will give each student continuous feedback and help develop each student from their current level. No previous musical knowledge is required.

Course Content

During this online course, you will focus upon guitar basics as well as exploring intermediate techniques. This will include posture, fingerstyle and plectrum techniques as well as chords, scales and a variety of musical pieces that span different styles and genres.



Please note: although you will be introduced to all the above over 5 weeks, courses are developmental over the whole year. If you sign up for the full three terms (courses A, B and C) at the start of the academic year e.g. August/September, you will be entitled to the early bird discount.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will learn through:

Practical, creative activities
Group exercises and peer assessment
Listening and analysis
Demonstration and discussion
Use of supporting online materials (Google Classroom/Teams)
Individual practice
Use of ILT (computers)
Continuous assessment

Assessment

You will be continually assessed through your practical activities and will receive feedback in a variety of ways e.g. peer assessment, verbal and written feedback from your teacher.

Next Steps and Progression

Upon successful completion of the course, you may be able to progress to other WMC performing arts or creative arts classes.

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer.
