When you want to expand your guitar playing beyond the beginner stage, this course is for you. You will learn songs that are a little more complex in their chord sequences. You will also learn barre chords, country flatpicking, blues licks and have an introduction to jazz chords including, learning to play a jazz standard. We will also explore the fascinating world of how chords fit together to reach an understanding of the basis of all music theory.

Course Requirements
You will need to have attended the Guitar - Blues, Country and Jazz (Beginner) course or have equivalent experience (i.e. good command of basic open chords and the ability to play through the chords of a song without stopping) to enrol on this course. You will also be expected to complete an Individual Learning Plan to help support your progress.
Course Content
The course will include, blues and country forms of guitar playing, including the use of modulation. You will look at soloing techniques and the use of jazz chord shapes in the context of playing from chord charts and improvisation. You will also study harmonised scales, modes, arpeggios and other useful approaches to improvisation in different musical contexts. Please note - although you will be introduced to all the above over a single term (10-weeks), the course is developmental over the whole year. If you sign up for the full three terms (courses A, B and C) at the start of the academic year e.g. August / September you will be entitled to the early bird discount.
Teaching and Learning Methods
You will learn through, practical activities, group exercises and peer assessment, listening and analysis, demonstration and discussion, use of supporting online materials, individual practice, use of ILT and continuous assessment. There is no homework associated with the sessions but please do discuss extension activities with your tutor.
Independent Learning
You will be expected to work independently to develop your guitar technique. The focus should be on instrumental practice but should also include developing your understanding of music theory.
Assessment
You will be continually assessed through your practical activities and will receive feedback in a variety of ways such as peer assessment, verbal and written feedback from your teacher. This is a non-accredited course but a certificate of completion can be provided by the College on request.
