Guitar: Blues, Country, and Jazz - Beginner

Course Description

Blues, Country and Jazz are the roots of rock and pop guitar-playing. On this course for absolute beginners and those who have tried a bit of guitar previously, you will learn a basic blues backing that you can play with other musicians or singers. You will also learn strumming, how to change between chords to play songs and how to solo with simple scales. The course will also help you understand the music theory behind chords.

Location: Camden

Course Requirements

Suitable for beginners and those who have tried a bit of guitar, the course will introduce you to the basic techniques that will build your confidence with the instrument and prepare you to play basic chords and scales, and get some understanding of music theory. You need your own guitar although we can let individuals borrow an instrument in class. However, without practice outside, you will not develop, so borrowing a guitar can only be a short-term arrangement. You will also be expected to complete an Individual Learning Plan to help support your progress.

Course Content

You will explore basic guitar technique such as chords and simple scales. You will also be introduced to strumming techniques and music theory that will help your understanding of chords. Typically, you will work in groups, developing your technique through simple exercises that will eventually develop into performing songs together. Please note - although you will be introduced to all the above over a single term (10-weeks), the course is developmental over the whole year. If you sign up for the full three terms (courses A, B and C) at the start of the academic year e.g. August / September you will be entitled to the early bird discount.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will learn through, practical activities, group exercises and peer assessment, listening and analysis, demonstration and discussion, use of supporting online materials, individual practice, use of ILT and continuous assessment. There is no homework associated with the sessions but please do discuss extension activities with your tutor.

You will be continually assessed through your practical activities and will receive feedback in a variety of ways such as peer assessment, verbal and written feedback from your teacher. This is a non-accredited course but a certificate of completion can be provided by the College on request.
