Glass Art: Slumping and Sagging (Mixed Level)

Course Description

This course will introduce you to these 2 kiln formed glass techniques to produce a diversity of glasswork from tableware to sculptural work. Slumping primarily uses moulds to shape glass forms, whilst sagging uses an aperture for the molten glass to flow through in the kiln, to create new forms. You will learn the basic techniques and from there be able to develop your own ideas and projects. Basic materials provided.

Course Content

This course is exploratory and will extend your kiln forming experience We will cover cutting, assembly, inclusions, kiln firing and slumping/sagging. We will also look at finishing techniques. A great way to develop new ideas and skills.

By the end of the course you will have at least two pieces to demonstrate your new skills in kiln formed glass. From this course you could progress to more advanced glass courses, interior design work or sculptural work.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching will be student centred with an emphasis on personal development and expression of your ideas. You will have demonstrations, one to one tutorials, group discussion with the other students to enable a sharing of knowledge and skills. Resources used within each lesson are available electronically.

Independent Learning

There is no formal homework, however, your tutor will discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, gigs or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course.

Qualification you will achieve

There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.

Basic materials provided. Your tutor will share a list of specialist suppliers where you can get materials for your own projects. WMC – The Camden College provides financial support for course fees, which is based on eligibility criteria.
