Garment Construction (Beginners)

Course Description

Discover how to make your own clothes using professional sewing methods. Working with a commercial pattern, we will take a structured, step-by-step approach. You will learn to sew important finishing details and achieve a technically accurate clean, crisp finish for your garments. This course is a fantastic introduction into the world of fashion and sewing.

Course Content

Day 1
o measure your body and the trouser pattern correctly to check the size
o understand the technical terms and correct method for cutting
o use the sewing machine to stitch with accuracy
Day 2
o construct trousers using professional sewing techniques
o learn how to sew important finishing details
o learn how to sew the appropriate fastening for your garment

This course is an introduction to garment making methods. It will provide many helpful tips about the fashion industry, teach professional techniques and encourage independent work.
This is a structured and very practical course and 100% attendance is highly advisable.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will be able to develop your skills by engaging with suitable projects determined by your existing level of experience in discussion with the tutor. Teaching is both as a whole class and an individual, one-to-one basis using demonstrations, discussion, examples, samples, handouts and other technical support material where appropriate. You will be able to negotiate individual learning goals together with the tutor.

During the first session the tutor will check your experience to date and personal goals for the course and if it is considered that it is not the right one you will be advised on a more suitable course.

You will be working at you own pace and be given verbal feedback on your progress.

All resources used within each lesson are available on our Virtual Learning Portal called iLearn.

Independent Learning

There is no formal homework, however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, gigs or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course.

Qualification you will achieve

There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.
