Etching and Photo Etching - Wednesday Morning (Studio Practice)

Course Description

Rembrandt had just three techniques for printmaking: dry point; hard ground and soft ground. We now have around 20 techniques which can be used in combination. These include lift grounds, photo etching and transfers. This course focuses on individual support and development; to present possibilities, to progress your plans and your personal and professional objectives.

Course Content

There is no time limit set on projects and this allows you to work to a point of confidence in the development of work and to have safe working practices. The course is student centred with projects available if required. The studio is equipped with a full range of etching relief printing areas to allow you to work with line etching (soft and hard ground), aquatint, colour printing, photo etching, Chin Colle and relief printing. You will gain the essential skills or hone skills to produce etching/ intaglio and relief prints. You can steadily produce a portfolio of prints and drawings. Students are encouraged to contribute work to the WMC exhibitions.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Learning will take place on each student?s own terms at his or her own pace. Interest in each other?s work will be encouraged by means of a group discussion and critique at the end of each session.
You can expect a range of learning methods including:
Individual and group tuition
Practical demonstrations of methods
Practical assistance with methods
Advice and possibilities for developing work
Group discussion and review of work
Handouts

Resources used within each lesson are available electronically.

Independent Learning

There is no formal homework, however, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects and research. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, films or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.

Assessment

There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course.

Qualification you will achieve

There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Additional Learning Support

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an assessment by the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.

Additional Costs

Basic materials provided, including inks. Additional plates , paper and tools can be purchased from us at cost price. WM College provides financial support for course fees, which is based on an eligibility criteria for those on lower incomes. This is available through a Studio Bursary which may cover up to 50% of your fee - for more information, please contact a member of the Learner Services team at the main reception.
