Etching & Photo Etching - Friday Afternoon Intermediate/Advanced

Course Description

The artist, Rembrandt had just three techniques for printmaking: dry point; hard ground and soft ground. We now have around 20 techniques which can be used in combination. These include lift grounds, photo etching and transfers. This course focuses on individual support and development; to present possibilities, to progress your plans and your personal and professional objectives.

Course Requirements

This is a course for those with 3 years or more of printmaking experience. Basic materials provided including an A5 plate to learn techniques. You can buy additional materials at cost price including plates, tools and specialist papers. These are paid for during your course via our internal payment system. If you are interested in a specialist technique not listed or described in the course description, please contact before enrolling to find out if it is possible for us to accommodate this. Please note we do use solvents in this studio, and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), is provided.

Course Content

There is no time limit set on projects, and this allows you to work to a point of confidence in the development of work and to have safe working practices. The course is student centred with projects available if required. The studio is equipped with a full range of etching relief printing areas to allow you to work with line etching (soft and hard ground), aquatint, colour printing, photo etching, Chin Colle and relief printing. You will gain the essential skills or hone skills to produce etching/intaglio and relief prints. You can steadily produce a portfolio of prints and drawings. Students are encouraged to contribute work to the WMC exhibitions.

Teaching and Learning Methods

A range of printmaking processes will be demonstrated, and you will learn by applying these different techniques to produce your own unique individual prints. There will be opportunities for you to use basic press processes and develop your skills through group and individual 1-2-1 guidance, practice and discussion. Resources, such as handouts will be used within each lesson and are available electronically. There is no formal homework. However, your tutor may discuss ideas with you individually to help extend your study and for ongoing independent projects and research. Your tutor will also recommend exhibitions, films or websites for you to visit to enrich your study.


There is no exam or formal assessment for this course. However, you will work with your tutor to identify your aims at the beginning of the session and will receive one to one feedback throughout as well as sharing outcomes at the end of the course. There is no formal qualification attached to this course but you can receive a Certificate of Completion from the college on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Once you have completed the course, you may choose to enrol on a further term in this subject or another subject in the Creative Arts department. For Art and Design courses, once you have developed a portfolio of work you could consider applying to the Foundation Diploma in Art and design as a pathway into higher education. Studio courses are for those learners with some subject knowledge or who have been studying the same subject at the college for 3 full years. Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet learners’ needs. Provision of assistive equipment is available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments, subject to an interview with the ALS team and/or the Disability Officer.
