English Functional Skills Entry 3

Course Description

This course will help you develop your practical reading, writing and speaking skills for a range of situations in everyday life at home, at work or in the community. On this course you will be working towards a nationally recognised Functional Skills qualification that will help you into employment or further study.

Course Requirements

You need to come to an initial assessment before you start so we can give you a course at the right level. If you have already got any English qualifications, bring your certificates with you when you come to the initial assessment.

Course Content

On this course you will : - read different kinds of texts and answer questions about type of text, main topic and details, purpose, style, facts and opinions, layout etc.; - write different types of text such as letters, emails, reviews etc. using formal and informal style; - learn how to plan what you write, and how to proof-read for errors; - improve your grammar, choice of vocabulary, spelling and punctuation.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will be taught in small groups, pairs and individually. You will participate in discussions, complete worksheets, read texts, complete writing tasks, ask and answer questions from the teacher and other learners, and use computers to access online resources. You will also develop study skills, to help you record and review useful information from your lessons including new vocabulary and spellings. You will discuss your individual learning goals and your progress towards these goals at regular points throughout the course with your teacher. All learners are expected to attend regularly and be on time. In addition to the classes you will be expected to complete regular homework and practise the skills you have learnt in the classroom.

Independent Learning

In addition to the classes you will be expected to complete regular homework and practise the skills you have learnt in the classroom.

Assessment

You will be assessed on your own individual targets. Achievement of targets may be through completing activities, simple tests or demonstrating your skills to the teacher. Most learners will also take an Functional Skills exam. Completion of this course will give you a College Certificate or an English Functional Skills qualification.

Next Steps and Progression

Most learners will be able to progress onto a higher level of study or vocational course.

Additional Learning Support

Additional Learning Support (ALS) is available for this course. ALS is subject to an assessment with a trained member of staff and support may include one or more of the following: support in the classroom, out of class workshops such as English, ICT and maths and specialist support for dyslexia. Provision of assistive equipment is also available and access support can be provided through reasonable adjustments with our Disability Officer. Please let us know as soon as possible about your learning needs and/or disabilities so we can arrange support at the earliest opportunity. Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs. Digital Learning support is available in the Learning Centre at our Camden site. Careers advice and guidance is also available to all learners.

Additional Costs
