Drumming - Mixed Level

Course Description

On this course you will gain a solid foundation in drum kit performance. The course explores five main topics - musicianship, hand-to-hand technique, snare drum reading, drum set coordination, and stylistic development. This will help develop two, three, and four-way coordination, in the context of Rock, Pop, Cuban, Brazilian, Jazz, Funk, Country & Dance music styles. You will also be encouraged to foster an awareness of ensemble playing, musicality, and interpretation.

Course Requirements

You may be a beginner or have some experience with drumming. You may be self-taught or you may play in a group and wish to improve. Ideally, you should be able to play a beat. You will also be expected to complete an Individual Learning Plan to help support your progress.

Course Content

The course will explore five main topics - musicianship, hand-to-hand technique, snare drum reading, drum set coordination, and stylistic development. Attention is paid to developing good grip, sound production, and how to achieve balance between hands and feet. You will explore drum rudiments. You will develop basic snare drum reading skills and various time signatures. You will in turn develop two, three, and four-way coordination, in the context of Rock, Pop, Cuban, Brazilian, Jazz, Funk, Country & Dance music styles. You will be encouraged to foster an awareness of ensemble playing, musicality, and interpretation of the pieces performed. If you sign up for the full three terms (courses A, B and C) at the start of the academic year e.g. August/September you will be entitled to the early bird discount.

Teaching and Learning Methods

You will learn through, practical activities, group exercises and peer assessment, listening and analysis, demonstration and discussion, use of supporting online materials, individual practice, use of ILT and continuous assessment. There is no homework associated with the sessions but please do discuss extension activities with your tutor.

Independent Learning

You will be expected to work independently to develop your drumming technique. The focus should be on instrumental practice but should also include developing your understanding of rhythm theory e.g. tablature.

Assessment

You will be continually assessed through your practical activities and will receive feedback in a variety of ways such as peer assessment, verbal and written feedback from your teacher. This is a non-accredited course but a certificate of completion can be provided by the College on request.

Next Steps and Progression

Teachers are supported to ensure their materials are inclusive to meet all learners needs.
